The Igbo tribe has a practice called Omugwo. Omugwo is not exclusive to the Igbo tribe but it is traditionally entrenched with the tribe. This age-long practice is one where a new mother receives after-birth care and support from their mother (or mother-in-law or both) for the first few months (2 to 5 months) of motherhood. The mother figure provides knowledge, support and guidance to their daughter who is either navigating motherhood for the first time or overwhelmed by the challenges of nursing a new-born. This kind of support has become even more important in the 21st century of parenting where women work and typically have only three months of maternity leave. The support allows them to recover from labour better while giving them the confidence that their baby is in safe and trusted hands when they return to work after their leave.
